With heatwaves becoming more frequent and intense under climate change, effective urban heat management has become imperative. Heatwaves exacerbate heat-related illnesses, depress labor productivity, and sharply increase energy demand, necessitating robust heat mitigation strategies. Among these, the expansion of urban shading infrastructure to block direct solar radiation has emerged as a particularly promising approach for alleviating thermal stress. Unlike prior work, which has focused on comparing shading typologies or proposing strategies to enhance cooling effect, assessments of the spatial suitability of shade installations within urban environments remain scarce.
In this study, we conducted an ex-post evaluation of 462 crosswalk canopies in Suwon City using a climate change risk framework to assess their spatial suitability. By examining each installation site through the lenses of hazard, exposure, and vulnerability, we identified both locations that align with policy objectives and areas where additional shading is required.
Our findings offer decisio-makers a means to pre-evaluate the spatial suitability of proposed shade installations, thereby supporting the design of more effective urban heat stress management strategies. Future work will focus on operationalizing this evaluation framework into a practical, user-friendly decision-support tool, incorporating feedback from stakeholders to ensure its real world applicability.
