The Korean Green New Deal policy emphasized a strategy to transform the economic foundation into eco-friendly and low-carbon green economy. However, discussions and studies regarding public acceptance on this top-down environmental policy have been rare. Why (or why not) do the public accept green new deal policy? Environmental problems are closely linked to inequality in that socio-economic transition to carbon neutral system may have varying impacts on industries and generations. Therefore, if the conflicts caused by inequality are well adjusted, social actors can advocate for the policy. This research aims to test whether and to what extent the public perception of the central and local government's capability to lessen inequality affects the acceptability of Korean Green New Deal policy. Ordered logit models of a survey on Green New Deal suggest if the public perceived incompetency of the central government responding to inequality problems, the acceptance level for the Korean Green New Deal policy decreases. This implies that enhancing central government capability to tackle inequality is likely to increase the level of public acceptance of the Korean Green New Deal policy.
