How do International Monetary Fund (IMF) programs affect green growth? This research analyzes the environmental impact of IMF programs on participating countries. While extensive research has explored the factors influencing sustainable development, there is a notable lack of studies examining how IMF programs specifically impact green growth.
Furthermore, existing literature on the effects of IMF participation has predominantly focused on economic and social dimensions, with very little attention paid to environmental outcomes. To address this gap, the analysis focuses on the environmental performance of countries receiving IMF assistance. The research employs OLS regression with a two-way fixed effects model, analyzing data from 106 countries between 1980 and 2019. The dependent variable, green growth, is measured using Green Gross Domestic Product (GGDP) data from Stjepanovic, S., et al. (2022), while the independent variable is IMF program participation, using data from Reinsberg, B., et al. (2024). The findings reveal that involvement in IMF programs has a negative impact on the GGDP of the participating countries. Based on these results, the analysis underscores the need for the IMF to incorporate environmental considerations into the design of its programs to enhance long-term sustainability and support the sustainable development of nations facing financial crises. This work makes a significant academic contribution by employing the novel concept of GGDP to assess sustainable development and green growth, introducing IMF program participation as a new independent variable to measure the degree of green growth, and empirically analyzing the environmental impact of IMF programs.
