This study investigates how energy resource endowment and political regime type interact to influence renewable energy transitions across 172 countries between 2000 and 2021. Using the share of electricity produced from solar and wind as the dependent variable, the analysis reveals that coal endowments significantly hinder renewable energy transition. Conversely, oil endowments significantly promote renewable energy transition. Importantly, when these energy resource endowments interact with political regime type, both coal and oil exhibit a positive effect under democratic regimes. These findings align with the "resource curse" theory. Furthermore, an additional analysis examining the impact of renewable electricity generation on actual carbon reduction demonstrates that carbon reduction is more effective in democratic nations. Consequently, while some authoritarian states may achieve rapid renewable energy development, the findings highlight the crucial role of democratic governance in resource-rich nations for truly greener outcomes.
